East Devon Towns

There are an abundance of pubs and restaurants in this part of Devon. The list below features those that we would recommend, and they are all within a few miles of your holiday cottage.

Steamers Restaurant

Steamers serves a variety of dishes, from fresh seafood caught in the sea nearby, to Mediterranean-style cuisine and traditional British meals using locally sourced, award-winning meats and dairy produce. Devon spring water, local organic juices and cider, plus Fairtrade wines and hot drinks make this an excellent choice of venue.

Golden Lion Inn, Tipton St John
Run by French chef Francois and his wife, this is a relaxing pub providing a varied menu. You can walk along the River Otter into Tipton to enjoy a pint of Otter ale in the pretty garden. Their tasty lunch menu includes delicious steak frites and a selection of cheeses and chutneys on a ploughman's board.

Five Bells Inn, Clyst Hydon
This 16th century inn won a Michelin Bib Gourmand award for its "moderately priced menus that offer good value and carefully prepared meals". There is a large pub garden and a little outdoor swimming pool next door.

Jack in the Green Inn, Rockbeare
Devon Life magazine named the Jack "Best Gastro Pub of the Year" at their 2015 annual food and drink awards. As part of their Taste of Devon speciality menu, you can sample pork reared at nearby Kenniford Farm, as well as the restaurant's own air-dried coppa ham.

The Digger's Rest, Woodbury Salterton
The Digger's is a traditional thatched village pub serving freshly prepared and locally sourced seasonal produce. Formally a cider house, the 500-year-old building has exposed beams and a real log fire surrounded by massive walls.

Bridge Inn, Topsham
Now in its fourth generation of the same family, this pub specialises in real ale, with up to ten available at any one time.  Local cider comes from a mile away and robust wines from not much further.  Simple food is served at lunchtime, and you can sit in the garden beside the river or squeeze into a family snug if you’re lucky. It’s very near the cycle trail from Exmouth to Exeter and worth a visit – even the Queen has been to the Bridge Inn!

The pubs below are a little further from the holiday cottages than the pubs above but are still easily accessible and highly recommended.

The Turf, Exminster (highly recommended)
This is not the easiest place to reach but is well worth the effort.  Situated along a peninsula on the Exe, walking, cycling or boat are the only means by which to reach it.  By car you will travel down a potholed lane and then have to walk for half a mile.  Cycling from Exeter Quay or taking a fun twenty-minute trip on the Topsham to Turf ferry are both preferred ways to reach The Turf.  It’s great for simple home-cooked food, a wonderful atmosphere, summer-long barbecues and spectacular views.  There is even a pirate ship in the gardens to entertain the children. To travel by boat, catch the Sea Dream Two ferry that runs hourly throughout the summer. See for sailing times.

Double Locks, Canal Bank, Exeter
Wonderful locally sourced food in an idyllic setting on the River Exe. Watch the oldest shipping canal in England in operation while relaxing with a pint of Otter Ale in the sunshine.
